1. Plan it well and start NOW

Starting straight after you get set the task will put you in a better position than starting a day before submission.

In case of dissatisfying scores, IELTS can be taken again, but only after 3 months of the first test date.

Listening test tips

It is possible that for listening tests a headphone is used. Confirm with the British Council and prepare accordingly. You also must practice the listening tests in the Cambridge IELTS 3 book for greater familiarization. The listening sections comprises of dialogues or monologues. There are 40 questions to be answered in 30 minutes. Dialogues require utmost concentration as the conversation tends to be faster. Listen carefully to the answering instructions and follow them.

Reading test tips

Reading is considered by many as the most difficult section. There are 3 long multi-paragraphed sections and 40 questions to be answered. The key to crack this section is improving your speed and reading skills. It is not your comprehension of the passage, but the ability to derive relevant information, that is tested here. Preferably go through the questions before (to know the information required) and mark the relevant lines as you read the passage. If you can't get an answer, move on and come back later. Do not waste time.

Writing test tips

During practice do actually write out tasks 1 and 2. Task 1 usually requires you to describe a table/diagram/graph in minimum 150 words. Do not use less than 150 words as marks are deducted. Task 2 requires you to present an argument. Read lots of editorials, analysis etc. to develop ideas. Do present your stand- agree/disagree, arguments in support of your views and arguments for your disagreement. Task 2 is more important and carries more marks. Ideally spend 40 minutes on task 2 and 20 minutes on task 1. Preferably attempt task 2 first than task 1.

Speaking test tips

First and foremost speak only in English to improve your diction, vocabulary, fluency, grammar and thought process. You will be marked on these aspects. The speaking test is 3 parts- an introduction of examiner and yourself, in second section, you are given a topic to speak for 2 minutes. One minute is provided to go through the passage. Read the questions carefully, gather thoughts about the topic and speak about the answers sought. The examiner may ask a few questions once you have finished the 2 minutes. The last section will be a discussion based on your answers in section 2.

You don't have to go to college to find someone through the alumni association. If you have an old work friend, or roommate from after college, you can find them if you know what college they went to. If you went to college with the person in question, you already know what alumni association you want to find. There are a few different ways you can find them, and different amounts of information that each one will give you.

The best and fastest way to find out if a college has an accessible alumni association is to find them online. Almost all colleges and universities have web sites today, and most have a link right to that part of their web site. You may not get into it, however, if you are not a former student. If you were, you may already be signed up. You can search through with the search function to see if your person comes up.

If you don't seem to find anything useful online, you can always call up the college in question and ask someone what you can do to access the alumni association. When you are in the My SAT page you are able to change the score recipients fairly easy. You are given four score reports for free when you register and have the ability to change these score recipients anytime up to the Monday one week after you have taken the test.

You will receive the My SAT Online Score Report for free when you sign up for the SAT, and all you are going to need is an online College Board account. You are still going to receive your printed score report in the mail, but the online score report shows you more about how you performed on each section. The online report gives you the level of difficulty, the type of question, and how many questions you answered correctly, incorrectly, or omitted in each group.

Congratulations! You have been accepted to the program of your choice! You future looks bright! But what will it take to successfully complete your master's degree? Let us break this down into eight important steps. But heading back to school can be a long-term commitment, and often entails months and months of effort. There are some things you can do to make your time in school more worthwhile, rewarding, and expedited.

Step 1: Create a Program of study early in your program. Many masters programs required at least 36 credit hours but double check with your university. Most schools will also have a program of study available for you to fill out. Be sure to also take at least the minimum number of credit hours or some programs may automatically drop your enrollment thinking you have elected to discontinue. Look at the projected course offerings so that you can plan ahead.

Step 2. Complete your course work. And plan your course load carefully! Don't take on more than you think you can handle. Your advisor will be there to assist you in the course of the program. It is good practice to meet with your advisor at least once each term to examine your progress and to plan ahead.

Step 3: Choose a committee if it your program requires a thesis, or a master's research project. The committee will guide you in completing your program successfully.

Step 4: Learn more about your new career: While in the program, learn more about the new profession or career you will be embarking on. This could be in the form of internships, research assistant, through your courses, or conducting your own research.

Step 5: Write and defend a thesis. This is where your committee will work with you to develop a quality product. It's a challenging task but also one that is rewarding. Start out by outlining your proposed topic, methods, theory, and procedures for the completing the thesis. Some programs may require you to write a comprehensive exam in lieu of or in addition to the thesis. Be sure to study for that as well.

Step 6: Start looking at job postings. Prepare your portfolio, which can include your resume, artifacts, credentials and other examples that showcase your best self. It is never to early to start looking. Keep a list of potential jobs and ensure that you are receiving the skills and knowledge from your program. Don't wait till after graduation to start applying for jobs. After all, that's why you started the master's degree, right?

Step 7: Apply for graduation. At some point during your program of study, apply for graduation. Be sure to check the deadlines. Some come up very early in the program, and you certainly do not want to miss that.

Some options to consider are accelerated and online programs options that are especially important for adults with families and jobs, non-traditional scheduling, possibility of transferring credits. Although completing your degree quickly may be important to you, be sure to check the quality of the school you are planning to attend. Be sure it is accredited. While exciting and new, your first day of higher education may also be very stressful. Your first day is the day you make first impressions, not only with the new crowd at school, but with professors, TA's, roomates, and dorm-mates.

I think this title deserves to be split into two categories. There is the first day you move in to a dorm, or campus living, and in a way, that is like the first day of higher education. It is the day you enter into a brand new environment, and the life you will be living the next 4 years. There is also the first day classes begin. Getting lost and confused are all apart of that dilemma. Here are some tips to guide you through both beginning stages in higher education.

1) First day of college life

The rush-a dreaded day for dorm goers. This is the first day you're allowed to move into the dorms or apartments, and EVERYBODY is moving in. On my first day, the building I was moving into was a mess. Not only were they moving in 800+ young and excited freshman on one day, but they were doing it in a building with old, cranking elevators that broke down half the time. For someone living on the 7th floor, like myself, carrying a loft and mattress up 7 flights of stairs was not an option.

So here's the first tip: either come very early to move in, or later in the evening. It's usually crowded by about 9am, so unless you're really an early bird, I'm going to stress the evening. Find a place for your family to stay for the night, and show up to your new campus around 4pm. Moving in will take and hour to an hour and a half, rather than five hours during the day.

Tip two: Once all moved in, keep the dorm door open, and meet new people right away. The people living on your floor are the people you will see the most this first year of college. Introduce each other and be open minded. Get to know people, and go hang out in the common area for awhile. These people can be a lot of help later on with classes, studying, or basic living problems.

2) First day of classes

Tip three: Don't find where your classes are on your first day of classes. Before the big day, walk around the campus and find all the buildings you'll need to transport to. This way you can also get to know where other important locations may be, like the library, food venues, or your advisor's office.

Tip four: Come to your first day of classes prepared. Pick up your books ahead of time, and bring at least paper, pen/pencil, and the required textbook for each class. Some professors will give you assignments on the first day, and you'll need to write them down. Others will give you important information about the class and schedule that you'll need to remember. Besides all that, you'll be handed a ton of syllabuses and schedules to keep track of.

Tip five: Try to sit in the first three rows in a lecture. They told me this at freshman orientation, and I laughed at first. I learned quickly, however, how much it does matter. It's a great way to get a good first impression with your professor. My second semester I started sitting in the 3rd row for a class I had to repeat. When I came in for help with one of my assignments, I introduced myself to my professor, and to my surprise, although he didn't know my name, he knew me and knew exactly where I sat. Because of this, he knew I showed up to class nearly everyday, and was truly focusing on his lecture, and was happy to help me with my assignment. Happy to say, I passed that class the second time with flying colors.

Sitting in the first few rows can also help you concentrate on the material being taught. It's easy to space off or start doodling when you're tired, frustrated, or just not interested in the current unit. It's material you need to know however, and staying focused is key.

So good luck. If you do end up showing late for a class or miss out on an assignment, don't worry, it's not the end of the world. College is a learning process, and not only academically.

Everyone wants good grades, but in higher education, it's not always an easy process-even if your working desperately for it! The trick is in the habits. Good work and study habits can save you time while still getting you better grades.

1) Go to class, everyday

I had significantly higher grades my second semester of college just because I did one major thing differently than first semester. I went to class...all the time. It's easy to think you can sleep through class and still learn all the material through your online coverage, the book, and recitations. In reality though, you can't. Your professor is going to cover material that is not only not in your other sources, but material that is more in depth than your book will go. Your professor will review things and give hands-on experience with the information. If you go to class all the time, you will see a difference, guaranteed.

2) Study everyday

Just for 5 to 10 minutes. Go through every class and go over notes and additional material. You will retain information better, and in more detail. When you need to learn new material, you don't have to learn the background information for the new stuff; you already know it. By spending a little bit of time everyday, you will save hours of time later on. As an additional benefit, you won't need to cram an entire night for a test, or an entire week for a final.

3) Take better notes

Through experience, you will learn to take better notes. However, the first step is to actually take them! Don't just sit in class, print off the notes, and try to retain information that way. Write important topics down, even if it's not in detail. Just writing the topic down will remind you of the lecture in class. When the test comes around, and your reviewing your notes, you can look up more details on the topic in your book or ask specific questions in class.

4) Stay on a regular schedule

Staying on a regular schedule will help you get up for class, keep you focused, and lessen stress. Get up at the same time everyday. Once you sleep in that extra 15 minutes, you will want to sleep in a half an hour, then you just stop going to class altogether. Go to bed when you need to to get up the next morning. You can stay up late on weekends. Eat close to the same time everyday. You will feel hungry when it's most convenient for you, not during class where it's there to distract you. Study at the same time everyday. This will mentally put you in 'study-mode' once that time rolls around, and you won't need to find more motivation to get things done.

5) Know what needs to be done

Stay organized, keep a planner, and do every assignment. Yes, even the reading assignments. Little assignments can rack up points fast, so don't skip out on them. Doing smaller assignments are the basis of the bigger ones, and you can complete big projects faster and more efficiently. Again, doing small, short assignments now will save you time later.

Keep all these in mind, and start making new habits for school. Once you get used to it, it's not hard at all to get good grades!
