Tips to Find Student Housing in a New City

Student housing can be difficult if you are going to live off campus but the trend today is to find affordable housing in a student community. One of the advantages of student community is that you will meet students from all over the world. You also will have an apartment that is guaranteed to have the amenities that you find important.

As you are looking for student housing it is a good idea to make sure you know what to look for in your search. When you find a student community you can be sure that most of them won't have broker fees or lease deposits to further your expenses and you can be sure there will be no hidden costs.

Students are usually looking for modern conveniences within their housing area and they want it to be a different experience than what they had in the dorm. However, it must also be affordable. This is why a student community may work best instead of just finding an apartment off campus.

If you are interested in a private bedroom and bath, spacious living areas and fully equipped kitchens then you can find these things within a student community. Many student housing communities offer the things that you need to stay in your location for however long your student life takes you to do. They offer Internet connections and sometimes you will feel like you are living in a resort.

Many universities are asking private developers to help them come up with a concept to create a student housing program. The basic reason is they want to retain students. One good way to retain students, besides offering them the curriculum choices they need is to give them a great living experience.

Most student communities have taken into consideration the specific needs of students. This student housing is close to campus and is near shopping areas where you can purchase groceries and other things you need easily.

As you are looking for a place to live, another good idea is to decide what you need. Would a residence hall provide you with what you need or a traditional apartment? If so most colleges offer these options. Both of these have their pros and cons. As an example, a residence hall can be a great place to live because you are round other students. However, sometimes this option is noisy and if you want privacy it will be difficult to find.

Sometimes students who are freshmen or who transfer into the university will not have the option of living off campus in their own apartment until their second year.

One of the ways to find student housing though, is to go online. You can find a variety of choices and you can check out the college or university's policy for off campus housing.

Practical Advice For College Student Protection

Practical Self Protection alternatives

This article will not address hand guns as it is in my opinion that a fire arm have no place in the public domain. For one reason a person may not have time to use a hand gun and also you stand a chance of having your own gun pointed at you!

We will discuss practical measures that can be used by any adult, or even if you have kids in college, to give them an extra edge of protection. When my daughter began college in a congested city I wanted to know that she would be as safe as possible. Of the many options available there were 3 choices that were the most practical.

Number one is a whistle. These can be purchased almost anywhere and are very easy and practical to keep on your person. Of course there is no danger of injuring self with a whistle and it can be worn on a necklace around the neck. I personally liked the idea of the whistle and I purchased her one, but I didn't feel that it had enough punch really. Naturally this would only be effective in an area where people may be within 100 yards.

The next 2 choices would be a Taser Gun and or Pepper Spray. Both of these are practical choices as the expense is very cheap now days and very portable as well. There are benefits to each.

A Taser gun comes in many voltage ranges, from 20,000 volts to 1.2 million volts. With such a large range many people do know which size would be most beneficial. With my own research I've found that 100,000 volt Taser has plenty of strength to demobilize any attacker for 2 to 4 minutes. The physical size is small and only requires one 9 volt battery for operation. The higher voltage Tasers are just too powerful for a college student to have on their person.

The Taser is ideal for wearing on the wrist with provided wrist strap. It is easily activated by the push of just one button. A Taser is ideally used when there would be more of an ambush attack where a person has little time to prepare. If the Taser gun is held in the hand, secured with the wrist strap as one walks from point A to point B, you will have no problems in fending off an attacker, even with a behind the back assault.

Pepper spray is my preferred choice for a couple of reasons. Number one, if you are on your toes and make sure you can not be surprised by someone jumping out of an ally or out of a car etc. you will have an advantage over the Taser gun. That advantage being you can place 12 feet between you and the attacker as the Pepper Spray can easily shoot 10 to 12 feet. I can assure you that a person looses all interest in completing an assault while their eyes are burning and they are temporarily blind. I also prefer the Pepper Spray due to the fact that my kids could get into less trouble with that, than with a Taser Gun.

However, my daughter is very responsible and with these products being so inexpensive these days I purchased all three products for her. Don't laugh, I'm a Father after all.

Having done this, I took ample time to work with her explaining that none of these products will work if she does not take the preparation to have them with her when she needs too.

I made her promise to always wear the whistle around her neck. I also Velcro the Pepper Spray tube to the outside of her purse where she could easily have access to it if she was out and about. She could also remove this when going into class etc and put it back in her purse. With the Taser gun, I advised her to place it in her hand, with the wrist strap secure anytime she was walking at night time unescorted (which I also told her not to do) heh.

Kids will be kids, and they will not always listen of course. But if I can provide 3 different measures of self protection for Daughter in College, then the chances rise dramatically that she will always have a form of protection available.

College - 7.5 Principles For Improving Your College Attitude

A successful college life will be mostly determined by your attitude, that's right by your attitude. How you perceive others and your situation will affect everything you do in college. Whether, it's about getting along with your roommate or trying to please your professors your attitude will make the difference.

So here are 7.5 principles to help develop the right attitude toward college life.

#1 Life's Not Fair

The first thing you need to do is realize that life's not fair. It never has been and never will be. Things will not always go your way and at times it will seem that others have it easier than you. So, what if they do? Suck it up and get over it.

#2 Learn to Laugh

It is very important that you learn to laugh at yourself because everyone else is. Laughing is great for your health and mental well being.

#3 Solve Your Problems

Learn to solve your own problems. It's not anyone else's business to solve your problems and no one else will give your problems the same attention you will. You may need to get others to help you solve the problem but it is your responsibility to see that it's solved.

#4 Do What You Love

Never work just for money. If you perform a job solely for the money you will never enjoy what you do. Instead seek to do what you love and then do it so well others will pay you to do it.

#5 Invest in You

Never stop learning. Make time to read, listen to CD's and attend classes that will increase your knowledge and skills. Don't be afraid to spend money on your training. It will be the best investment you have ever made.

#6 Focus on Results

Focus on your strengths and successes. It doesn't pay to spend a lot of resources on things that don't work for you. Learn to recognize what you're good at and put your resources into those things. Pay someone to do those things you can't.

#7 You Cannot Quit

In order for you to succeed in college you will need to be persistent, determined and relentless. You will have tough classes, tough tests and even tougher professors, but you must persist in spite of all opposition. You must never give up!

#7.5 Go the Extra Mile

Always be prepared to do more than what is asked of you. If you make it your habit to do more than what is expected, you will stand out from the crowd.

Can Water Gardens Be Installed Inside a College Or University?

Find contemporary garden fountains on the grounds of a university or college and you'll probably find happy, successful students and faculty. The appearance of on-campus garden fountains depicts a truly ivy league establishment. In fact, a contemporary garden fountain doesn't necessarily have to be situated outside. Where do students spend the majority of their time studying? If it's the campus library, a garden water fountain could be established within a mini atrium or beneath a domed glass ceiling.

The key is to decide where on campus that fountain is going to go. Once that has been established, decide on the style, size, and type of material the garden fountain should be made of. Keep in mind that the garden fountain will probably attract people, providing an inviting area for students to congregate. For that reason, it's important to have adequate seating in the vicinity of the garden fountain. Opening up an area where students can relax, discuss, and share ideas is the best way to promote learning. The flowing water sound of a water fountain is sure to be enjoyed by all and will calm, relax and draw people together. This could even be a factor a student considers when choosing a school as fountains are usually remembered by all who see them.

The sound of gently cascading water is not only soothing, it's comforting. When installing garden fountains in a college or university, place them where students are most likely to enjoy them, and get the greatest benefit from them. Water fountains also provide instant beauty so you instantly have an upgrade to the facility that will last years.

Higher Education and Military Service Academies

Opposite of the GI Bill where an individual can complete military service in exchange for tuition benefits, the military service academies offer a free education with an obligation to serve in the military following graduation. Those that attend military service academies directly from high school are not entitled to GI Bill benefits(this may change under the new GI Bill..for those that serve past their initial 5 year obligation). Traditionally, the service obligation has been 8 total years, 5 years that must be fulfilled on active duty, as graduates are commissioned a lieutenant in their respective branch of service. The remaining 3 years can be served in the Individual Ready Reserve, IRR or in the National Guard or Reserve Forces.

Furthermore, between West Point, Annapolis, and the Air Force academy there existed a service exchange program where cadets could graduate from one service academy, but be commissioned in another branch. Historically only a few cadets participated in this program. At least for West Point, this program has ceased due to current Army demands. Additionally, for recent West Point graduate classes have been offered incentives that guarantee the Army will allow you attend graduate school in exchange for additional years of active military service. The would require an officer to serve 3 more additional years on active duty for a total of 8 years active duty. Although officers receive full pay and benefits while attending graduate school, the catch is that this offer, accepted by 352 of the 875, 2006 graduating cadets also requires that the officer serve an additional 3 months of active duty for every one month of graduate studies.

Thus, that 8 year obligation is really 11-12 years with a one year graduate degree. The translation is that by accepting this additional incentive, graduates will pass the 10 year mark of a 20 year career that is required to receive full pay and benefits. Does it make sense to leave the military 8 years away from retirement? Another important note is that officers can still choose to attend graduate school, contingent upon the Army allowing you, at a later date without accepting the additional service obligation. Those graduating in high academic standing may want to consider this option as the likelihood of being accepted by a graduate college is high as well as the likelihood of the Army releasing the officer for graduate studies.

NCLEX Practice Exams - Don't You Want to Pass?

One of the secrets to a successful bout with the NCLEX is to practice on sample exams. Answering them will give you a feel of how it's like to be actually taking the test. That way, you wouldn't be surprised when you see those seemingly unfamiliar questions.

Practicing for the NCLEX has been proven to be an effective study exercise for the exam. This will surely complement your study guides, review materials, review courses and the like in your quest to be a licensed nurse. Sample questions for the NCLEX work harmoniously alongside your reading materials.

There are many online and offline sources of sample questions for the exam that you can use. These NCLEX practice exams most of the time are developed by nursing faculty and practitioners. It is important that you choose wisely and separate the credible from the dubious sources of these materials.

Once you have your sample exams, then all you need to do is follow your review schedule and answer the sample tests thereafter. It also works as a sort of a diagnostics exam because it will tell you where you should focus your review.

Below are some tips on how to answer those practice exams:

Read the questions very carefully. In fact, you must read every word of a question in order to answer it successfully. Most of the time, qualifying words such as most, least, definitely, probably, except and the like have so much significance in your answer. These small but important words will help you determine the correct answer. Always take time to read the questions in its entirety. Scanning through them is not enough.

Try to avoid careless errors. Sometimes in our haste to move on to the next question, we tend to commit careless mistakes. These mistakes, if you add them up, leads to a substantial number of wrong answers. You wouldn't want to have that in your actual NCLEX exams as it may prove disastrous to your bid in becoming a nurse.

Eliminate evidently wrong answers. The process of elimination will narrow down your choices to a few. Bear in mind that in the NCLEX, there are wrong or right answers. You cannot argue your way out of the exam, like in essay-types of tests.

NCLEX Categories - Exactly What You Will Face in the Exam

A nursing student should know better than to underestimate the NCLEX.

It is the single test that gives them license to practice nursing in that specific state in the U.S. Since the test is aimed at protecting the public from the incompetence of would-be practitioners, the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) has deemed it necessary to make passing the licensure test more difficult by raising the standards of passing.

There have been many things that have been said about the test.

This article aims to elaborate on the contents and categories in the exam that have been the cause of so much anxiety in the nursing world and give some degree of perspective.

Simply put, the NCLEX is a smorgasbord of four categories and they are: Safe and Effective Care Environment; Health and Promotions Maintenance; Psychosocial Integrity; and Physiological Integrity. It is made up of multiple-choice questions which present the examinee with four options. You need to answer at least 75 of the posed questions up to a possible maximum of 265 questions.

If you are taking the NCLEX and wish to pass it, you have to answer about half of the more difficult questions correctly.

Not all the questions are multiple-choice types of questions. The NCSBN has developed and introduced an alternate item style of question to the actual format of the questions that includes a fill in the spaces, "hot spot" items and multiple-choice types of questions that involve more than one answer.

Fill-in-the-blanks types of questions usually require pharmacology calculations like computation of medication doses and flow rates. This is different from another set of questions that require short answers or an essay. A "hot spot" question means a candidate is asked to identify a portion of a photo or graphic item.

Multiple-choice types of questions that require more than just one possible answer are best illustrated in the example below:

1. The indicators of bacterial meningitis could be -

A. Ear pain
B. Red body rash
C. Fever
D. Headache
E. Leg cramps
F. Neck stiffness

In this specific example, C,D & F are the correct answers. (Small pat on the back if you got that right!) Choosing only one correct answer or the wrong one will be counted as a wrong answer.

There are also pretest questions that have no bearing on your score but are there for possible inclusion in future exams. They are reviewed by the board for suitability in future exams based on how you and your fellow examinees handle them in their current form. Candidates are not be able to tell the pretest questions from the scored ones when he or she takes the NCLEX.

Build a Dream Career in Architecture

In India, the construction and real estate is seeing a positive boom. The focus has shifted from just basic functionality to aesthetics, comfort, luxury and style. Hence, the demand for good architects is also on the rise. Architecture involves planning and designing of building and structures. A good architect can create marvels that remain as a testimony to his talent for ages. Taj Mahal, Eiffel Tower, pyramids of Egypt, Hotel Burj Al Arab, and many more like these are masterpieces of ancient and modern architecture. Today, architects need to blend their vision and dreams with materials to come up with structures that are high quality, with good functionality and environmentally friendly too.

Architects are required to design a variety of structures such as houses, apartments and colonies, shopping and commercial complexes, offices and industrial complexes, hospitals, hotels, airport terminals, schools etc. They are also required if a building has to be renovated or repaired. Thus, the demand for architects will never dwindle.

All those who are looking to make a career in this field have a few things to keep in mind. Ideally, students good at physics and mathematics are better suited to study architecture. To become an architect, one should have creativity with an interest towards designing. It is beneficial if one can also sketch and draw with a free hand. One should be socially and environmentally aware apart from being technically and mathematically sound to become a good architect. Of course, good communication skills, physical ability to work on the site, high concentration level, flexibility, patience, team spirit, responsibility and accountability can take one a long way in this field.

There are good training courses in architecture offered by institutes across India. To apply for a course, one should have completed higher secondary education with physics, chemistry, mechanical/ engineering drawing and mathematics, with a minimum of 60 percent marks. Most of the schools conduct entrance tests through national and state level entrance examinations. For entry to undergraduate programmes in government and private institutes, national level entrance examination is conducted by the Council of Architecture. However, there are separate state level tests too, such as one conducted by Tamil Nadu. Indian Institutes of Technology also offer architecture programmes. Entrance to these programmes is through the Joint Entrance Exams (JEE) held in May each year. Other than theses, one has to appear for an aptitude test to ensure admission.

The degree course B.Arch is a 5 year course. After the graduate course, one can also study architecture at the post graduate course which varies from 18 months to 2 years.
There are various good institutes that offer courses in architecture. School of Planning & Architecture in New Delhi offers two Undergraduate Programmes leading to Bachelor's Degree in Architecture and Planning. The Bachelor of Architecture is a five-year programme. The school also offers the Master's and Doctoral Programmes in Architecture. SPA offers a 4-year programme in Bachelor of Planning.

Chandigarh College of Architecture (CCA) is another good institute. The college conducts a five year course leading to the degree of Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch.)
The admission is made on the basis of the Common Entrance Test (CET) and Architecture Aptitude Test conducted by the Punjab University.

Based in Mumbai, the Sir J J School of Art conducts a 5-year course in Bachelor Of Architecture (B Arch). and a 3-year Master Of Architecture Degree. The institute also offers short term courses in computer education relevant to architecture after college hours.

Apart from these, there are other good schools like School of Architecture CEPT, Navrangpura, Ahmedabad; Lucknow University, Govt. College of Architecture; Goa University, College of Architecture; Indian Education Society's College of Architecture, Mumbai; Pune University, Marathwada Mitra Mandal College of Architecture; Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University, School of Planning & Architecture, Hyderabad; Kerala University, College of Engineering, Thiruvananthpuram; Anna University, School of Architecture & Planning., Chennai; IPS Academy, School of Architecture, Indore; Bengal Engineering College, West Bengal; Sushant School of Art and Architecture, Gurgaon; Vastu Kala Academy, School of Architecture & Interior Designing, New Delhi.

Some architects go in for specialization in India and abroad. The fiels of specialization could be urban designing, regional planning, building engineering and management, architectural conservation, industrial design, landscape arhitecture, naval architecture, architecture concerning traffic and transport planning etc.

There are a lot of avenues to choose from for architects. There are opportunities available in government as well as private sectors. The government organisations include Public Works Department, the Archaeological Department, Ministry of Defence, Departments of Railways, Post and Telegraphs, Public Sector Undertakings, National Building Organisation, Town and Country Planning Organisation, National Institute of Urban Affairs, Housing and Urban Development Corporation, National Building Construction Corporation Ltd., City Development Authorities etc. One can also go or private practice and start own firm and become a successful architect. After all, it requires dreams and good vision to make a mark in this industry.

10 Steps to Improve GRE Exam Score

1) There are lots of free online GRE practice Tests available. Take one of the test without any distractions and make a note score in Verbal and Quantitative sections.

2) For the questions you have answered wrong, make sure you find out why that particular answer was and find the right way to solve the problem. If you happen to learn a new formula or words, make a note of it in a separate notebook, one for Verbal and one for Maths.

3) Also, spend at least 1 hour per day for GRE Vocabulary from Barron's GRE book. It has 50 Word Lists. Try to remember at least 1 word list per week. So, every week 50 to 100 new words can be remembered.

4) Week 1 read the first word list, Week 2 revise the first word list and then start learning the Second Word List. So, that new words will stay in memory.

5) Best way to remember new words is to form a sentence for each word. (Other technique is to use Flash Cards)

6) Next, take an GRE Practice Test again and see how much you score, and for mistakes, again evaluate what went wrong. This is the best way to learn new maths formulas and at same time score will increase for every practice test.

7) No need to worry that scoring less in GRE practice tests, every student initially has the same problem. Spending at least 1-2 hours per day for first few weeks from now will get you going. In 2-3 months time scores will gradually increase.

8) So, the key to improve the GRE Scores/skills is to practice daily.

9) Majority of the students make the mistake of not finding out the right answers for the questions they go it wrong in GRE Practice test. This is the most proven way to improve your scores in GRE. For instance in first GRE practice test lets say score you score 1000 and 2 months later in your GRE Practice test if you score around 1000 again, then the approach taken to prepare for GRE is not the right way.

10) If your score doesn't improve, try following different approach for GRE preparation.

Elizabeth I of England's Immeasurable Impact

Biography

* Elizabeth I was the sixth and last monarch of the Tudor dynasty in England and daughter of King Henry VIII

* She was imprisoned for nearly a year in the Tower of London during the reign of her sister Mary I for suspicion of supporting the Protestant rebels the fervent determination of Mary to crush the Protestant faith

* Elizabeth was once declared an illegitimate heir to the throne by her brother Edward VI who did away with the Third Succession Act but his heir lost all support within two weeks leading Mary and Elizabeth back to power

* She turned down the marriage proposal of Philip II of Spain in 1959 worsening relations between the two countries

Accomplishments

* Her consistently defense foreign policy in Britain successfully managed to deter the Spanish threat of invasion that persisted throughout her rule

* England defeated the Spanish armada in 1588 which deterred any imminent threats of Spanish invasion and shattered Spain's naval power, empowering the British people and the British name and British strength while maintaining the Balance of Power in Europe

* She became the Supreme Governor of her newly established Protestant Church of England with the new Act of Supremacy Law in 1559 which required the Book of Common Prayer for worship but that was very tolerant of numerous religious views

Impact

The great reign of Elizabeth had an immeasurable amount of impact on the future. Had any other ruler reigned during her time, Spain likely would have invaded and taken over the nation of Britain. This would have destroyed the balance of power in the continent and would have undoubtedly led to a Spanish speaking America unimaginably different than today. Our America would simply be known as a small colony of Spain, with economic and commercial dominance unfathomable. Had any other ruler reigned during her time, the relative toleration of religion that existed in Britain would have never been known.

Millions of scholars and professionals would have been forced from the nation, and it would not have been nearly as industrially and commercially dominant in future centuries, leaving America without a template for global domination. Simply put had any other ruler reigned during her time, our free nation, our English language, our wealth, our technology, and us as we know it would not exist.
